The book is positioned to show the front and back of the book cover, designed by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner as a two-tone woodcut (black and green) on yellow cloth. A figure is depicted on the front with a green head and its left arm raised up to its black hair, its gaze directed toward the spine of the book at a black profile head on the back of the binding. The heads are surrounded by forest with a mountaintop behind each; the peak on the front is convex, the back is concave. In the upper third of the front are the names of the author and of the book; in the upper third of the back, the name and location of the publisher, on the spine, the author and title once again, vertically arranged from top to bottom.
