The colour lithograph depicting the first dream, titled “The Sailing Ship”, fills almost the entire page. The text is contained within an approximately 5-inch-wide margin running from top to bottom down the right outer edge of the page. A depiction of green countryside at the seaside dominates almost three-quarters of the picture. Stylised animals, flowers and trees have been integrated into the picture. Two gaunt men stand facing each other in the centre of the foreground. A bearded man dressed in black stands in front with his back turned to the viewer. He is holding the other man, who is standing behind him, by the left wrist. In the upper right quarter of the picture, a brown manned sailboat sails out to sea. The text in the right margin appears entirely in lowercase without the usual punctuation. Instead, slashes assume the function of punctuation marks and at the same time give the text a rhythm.
