The picture shows a coloured miniature from the Echternach Periscopes of Heinrich III. It depicts the scriptorium in a monastery. Two men sit on stools, each at a bureau writing on folded sheets of paper. The man seated to the left wears a shorter garment and has a full head of hair and a beard. This shows him to be a layman, while the man seated on the right can be seen to be a monk by his cowl and tonsure. The picture is surrounded by symmetrical Romanesque abbey architecture: a double roof with arcades reaches between two towers, there is a rhomboid area in the middle with a further view of the building seen from a central perspective. The Latin script above the roof explains that the picture shows the monastery at Echternach.
