The photo shows a lying-down book cover in brown leather. The cover has a flexible design and can be opened and closed using a fold-over flap that is held together by a brass clasp. Decoration has been added to the front in the form of lines created by a gouge and embossing stamps. The lines form a frame that is sub-divided many times into squares and triangles. The surface of the fold-over flap has blind embossed rosette elements. The border surrounding the front cover beneath that contains alternate rosettes and lions, also blind embossed. The two central areas at the top corners of the vertical square shapes show a stamp, one with the image of Saint Barbara, one with the image of Saint Bruno, which can be seen when the cover is open.
