Anton Philipp Reclam

Publisher ofworld literature at affordable prices

It’s the first law of business lore: where there's a penny to be won, do not disregard it.

Anton Philipp Reclam

The publisher’s son Anton Philipp Reclam had been versed in all aspects of book printing since his apprenticeship. Neither type founding nor book printing were unfamiliar to him. His first own company, the Literarische Museum, a lending and reading library, gave him insight into public tastes and reader interests. The Philipp Reclam jun. company founded in 1837 gave him his breakthrough 30 years later: in the “classics year” of 1867, in which all copyrights for works by authors who had been dead for 30 years or more were lifted, Reclam started his Universal-Bibliothek, which remains the most successful book series in German publishing today. He was able to enjoy his success for some 30 years more.

After World War II and the splitting of the publishing house, Reclam's great-grandson Heinrich Reclam initiated the revival of the famous book series in Ditzingen near Stuttgart. ‘’
