In the German Democratic Republic, no book could be published officially without the approval of the state, which was for all intents equivalent to censorship. Media control was not called “censorship”, however, but euphemistically referred to as “evaluation” and “approval”. To get around this control, alternative texts were illegally published and distributed by the authors themselves, circumventing the state authority.
